Sail Away:
This new CD, SAIL AWAY, is released to coincide with the Titanic’s 100 year anniversary of
the most famous disaster and tragedy ever and remembered and commemorated in
Belfast and around the world. These songs have been inspired by my thoughts of the
people of Belfast and other parts of the world, who lived and worked in hard and poor
conditions, yet were world famous ship builders. It was also inspired by the contrast
between the passengers rich and poor and seamen and staff who sailed on Titanic on that
fateful night. Some enjoying the adventure others looking for a new life.
Three Olympic class ocean liners were built at the Harland and Wolff shipyard for White
Star Line. They would be the most luxurious ocean liners ever seen and the greatest of
their time. These three ocean liners would in time be described as the Beloved, the
Damned and the Forgotten.
The first was RMS Olympic, which served from 1911 - 1935 when it was laid up and
scrapped. It saw some service as a troopship during the first world war and earned the
name Old Reliable.
Second was RMS Titanic. It served from 1911 - 1912, when of course she struck the
iceberg on 14 April 1912 and sank in the early hours of 15 April . 1,514 people lost their
lives.
Thirdly was HMHS Britannic. She was launched in 1914 just before the war, and after
being laid up at the shipyard for many months, was used as a hospital ship in 1915 and
sank after hitting a mine in December 1916. 30 people lost their lives.
